Interaction between two cylindrical inclusions in a symmetric lipid bilayer

چکیده
We calculate the membrane-mediated interaction between two cylindrical inclusions in a symmetric lipid bilayer. Our theory takes two contributions to the free energy into account, the elastic behavior of the membrane and the conformational restrictions that the flexible hydrocarbon chains of the lipids experience in the vicinity of a rigid inclusion. The description of the elastic behavior is based on two order parameters, the hydrophobic thickness of the membrane and a director field that characterizes the average tilt of the lipid chains. Conformational restrictions of the lipid chains are taken into account by a simple director model. We show that the short-range interaction potential between two inclusions sensitively depends on the degree of hydrophobic mismatch and on the spontaneous curvature of the lipid layers. In particular, we find pronounced attraction if the hydrophobic mismatch is positive. For negative mismatch the attraction is much less pronounced and, additionally, an energetic barrier appears. The inclusions prefer a small but notable negative hydrophobic mismatch. Positive spontaneous curvature amplifies these behaviors. © 2003 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1607305#

Conical inclusions in a lipid bilayer generate an overall spontaneous curvature of the membrane that depends on concentration and geometry of the inclusions. Examples are integral and attached membrane proteins, viruses, and lipid domains. We propose an analytical model to study budding and vesiculation of the lipid bilayer membrane, which is based on the membrane bending energy and the transla...
متن کاملCoupling between vesicle shape and lateral distribution of mobile membrane inclusions.
Membrane inclusions such as membrane-embedded peptides or proteins exhibit a curvature-dependent interaction with the surrounding lipid matrix due to the mismatch between their intrinsic curvature and the local membrane curvature. This interaction causes an inhomogeneous lateral distribution of the inclusions and a corresponding adjustment of the vesicle shape. We have studied theoretically the...

We model the influence of rigid inclusions on the curvature elasticity of a lipid membrane. Our focus is on conelike transmembrane inclusions that are able to induce long-range deformations in the host bilayer membrane. The elastic properties of the membrane are described in terms of curvature and tilt elasticity. The latter adds an additional degree of freedom that allows the membrane to accom...
متن کاملFluctuation-Induced Interactions between Rods on Membranes and Interfaces
We consider the interaction between two rods embedded in a fluctuating surface which is governed by either surface tension or rigidity. The modification of fluctuations by the rods leads to an attractive long-range interaction that falls off as 1/R4 with their separation. The orientational dependence of the resulting interaction is non-trivial and may lead to interesting patterns of rod-like ob...

Lipid bilayers, which form the basis of biological membranes, are self-assembled structures that belong to the field of soft matter. They feature very rich physical properties. While each of the two monolayers of the membrane is a two-dimensional fluid, the membrane resists bending and stretching: it is elastic. Biological membranes are composed of different lipid species and contain various in...
